The following table presents the traditional succession of the Paramount Rulers of Nnewi from the Nnofo Royal Dynasty of Otolo. The Obi of Otolo serves as the Igwe of Nnewi and the paramount traditional ruler of the Nnewi Kingdom. The table also shows the contemporary rulers of the other three quarters—Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi—during each reign where records are available.

The Monarchy of Nnewi is one of the oldest surviving traditional institutions in Igboland and serves as the hereditary leadership system of the Nnewi Kingdom in present-day Anambra State, Nigeria. Nnewi operates a unique traditional political structure often described as a tetrarchy, consisting of its four constituent quarters: Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi. While each quarter is headed by its own traditional ruler (Obi), the Obi of Otolo occupies the highest traditional position as the Igwe of Nnewi, the paramount ruler of the kingdom.

According to Nnewi oral tradition, the monarchy traces its origins to Mmaku, the ancestral founder of Otolo and grandfather of Nnewi. Following the establishment of the original settlement at Otolo around the late fifteenth century, Mmaku became the first recognised ruler of the community. He was married to Ifenweugwu and was succeeded by his son Ikenga. Ikenga married Ifite and became the father of Nnewi, the eponymous ancestor from whom the town derives its name. Nnewi later begot the lineages that gave rise to the communities of Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi, forming the foundation of the modern Nnewi Kingdom.

For centuries, the throne of Otolo—and by extension the paramount throne of Nnewi—has remained within the Nnofo Royal Family of Otolo. This royal lineage continues to provide the traditional rulers of Nnewi, preserving an unbroken succession that predates European contact and colonial administration. The Nnofo dynasty is therefore regarded as one of the most enduring royal houses in southeastern Nigeria.

Although the Igwe serves as the custodian of Nnewi’s customs, traditions, and cultural heritage, the role is primarily traditional and ceremonial. The monarch does not participate in the formal administration of Anambra State but remains the spiritual, cultural, and symbolic leader of the Nnewi people. The Igwe and members of the royal family perform numerous official, ceremonial, and representational duties within Nnewi, across Nigeria, and throughout the global Nnewi diaspora.

The current monarch is His Royal Highness Igwe Dr. Kenneth Onyemaeke Orizu III (Igwe Orizu III), who ascended the throne on 15 September 1963 following the death of his grandfather and predecessor, Igwe Josiah Orizu II. His reign has become one of the longest and most influential in the history of the Nnewi Kingdom, marked by significant contributions to education, community development, cultural preservation, and the promotion of Nnewi’s reputation as a leading centre of commerce and industry in Nigeria.
